Thank
you for your interest in obtaining a print, transparency, slide or
digital image of an illustration owned by the White House Historical
Association (WHHA). Most WHHA illustrations, including those appearing
in The White House: An Historic Guide, The Presidents, The
First Ladies, The Living White House, The White House
Garden, Art in the White House: A Nation’s Pride, and The
White House: Its Historic Furnishings and First Families may be
reproduced for personal, nonprofit, and certain commercial uses.
The
White House Historical Association will review each photographic
reproduction request and will grant or deny use permission on a case by
case basis. The following are guidelines only:
Permission
to use WHHA images may be granted for the following purposes:
- Nonprofit
— including educational or charitable projects by nonprofit
organizations, such as museums, schools, libraries, government agencies
and presidential libraries.
- Personal
— for display in a private home or office. Personal use images are not
to be published in any way.
- Commercial
— the material may be used in a for-profit venture only if the
illustration is incidental to and not a major feature of a publication
and if use falls within other stated WHHA guidelines.
The
following uses are not allowed:
- Advertising
- Resale
as prints, slides, transparencies, or in any other type of medium such
as CD-ROM
- Internet
distribution
- Publications
or projects that compromise the image of the White House or work of art.
- Publications
or projects where the WHHA images are the major feature of a
publication.
The
following specifications must be followed when using a WHHA image:
- Images
must be used in full, no cropping is allowed
- Images
may not be superimposed with type or other images
- Images
may not be altered or distorted in any way
- Credit
line or end credit must be included
Requests
for photographic reproduction permission must be submitted in writing
and should include the following:
- Identification
of the image desired for use (i.e., the title of the book and the page
number where found, name of painting and artist)
- A
description of how the image will be used
- A sample
of the design incorporating the image (when requested by the photo
archivist)
- Anticipated
date and print run
- Name,
address, phone and fax number of contact person
- Federal
Express or UPS account number if you wish the image to be sent ASAP (if
it is available)
FEES
Personal Use:
There
is an image fee but no use fee charged for personal use. However, since
photographs for personal use are considered a special order, all
sales are final. The photographic material cannot be returned and
the fee is not refundable. Exchanges will be provided only in cases of
obvious errors (such as the wrong photograph being sent, or shipping
damage to the photographic material). WHHA will not be responsible for
variations in the colors or tints in the photographic material when
compared to the original work, or a reproduction of the material found
in other media.
Non-profit:
If
permission is granted for the use of an illustration in a product that
is not for sale, the WHHA charges a one-time use fee for each
illustration of $50. If the item will be offered for sale, a
$75 fee will be charged for each use of an illustration. If there is an
additional need for the photographic material beyond the use originally
contracted for, additional permission must be obtained for that
additional use before publication. There will be a usage charge for
each such additional use. If an illustration in one of the WHHA’s
publications or slides is "lifted" for use in a commercial medium,
written permission must be obtained in advance. If permission is
granted, a reproduction fee must be paid prior to such "lifting."
A
credit line must be printed adjacent to each WHHA image or included in
the end credits. The credit line should read as specified at the time
permission is granted.
If
the desired photographic material is to be made from a transparency, an
advance deposit of $50 is required and will be refunded upon prompt
return of the transparency in reusable condition. Reusable
transparencies should be returned within 90 days to receive a full
refund. To keep the transparency longer than the original 90 days,
contact the photo archivist for an extension. There will be a charge of
$5 for each additional 30 days the material is not returned.
Commercial:
If
permission is granted for the use of an illustration, the association
charges a one-time use fee of $100 for each transparency, slide, or
photograph used in any medium produced or published by a commercial
enterprise. If there is an additional need for the photographic
material beyond the use originally contracted for, additional
permission must be obtained for that additional use before publication.
There will be a use charge of $100 for each such additional use. If an
illustration in one of the WHHA’s publications or slides is "lifted"
for use in a commercial medium, written permission must be obtained in
advance. If permission is granted, a $100 reproduction fee must be paid
prior to such "lifting."
A
credit line must be printed adjacent to each WHHA image or included in
the end credits.
Digital Images:
We
are able to provide some images digitally. If the desired image is to
be sent digitally, please specify the exact size and ppi needed. If the
image already exists in scanned format then the cost is $20. If a new
scan must be made then the cost is $30. Price of the CD to contain the
images is $15.
Fee Schedule:
All
photographs are produced unmated and unmounted.
Photographs
(color or black and white):
8"
x 10" $40 11" x 14" $60
16" x 20" $80 20" x 24" $100
Deposit
on 4" x 5" transparencies, black & white or color is $50. There
will be a non-refundable processing fee of $50 for all orders that
exceed ten transparencies.
Digital
files are $20 for an existing scan and $30 for a new scan. Cost of the
CD is an extra $15.
For
payment, the WHHA accepts cash, checks (payable to the White House
Historical Association), American Express, MasterCard, or Visa. Please
include your order number on the payment.
NOTE:
Sizes of photographs are given for the longer dimensions; the smaller
dimensions will vary according to the proportions of the originals. As
artwork does not always coincide with the sizes set forth above,
materials are reproduced as large as possible for the sizes of
photographic prints ordered. Prints will show full images, untrimmed,
to the extent possible.
Digital
files include scans from 4x5 transparencies or 8x10 prints cleaned of
major dirt and dust, to match the specifications of the customer, and
not to exceed 14 inches at 300ppi. Color images are corrected to a
pleasing color through global corrections only. Digital files may
require minimal additional corrections before final production (i.e.
un-sharp masking).
Because
the WHHA does not maintain a large inventory of transparencies, slides,
or photographs, all orders are custom orders. It is necessary to
receive payment at the time the order is placed. Your request will be
processed in approximately four weeks following the receipt of your
order and payment.
Shipping:
All domestic orders include shipping via ground Federal Express. If the
customer needs the order to arrive quickly, they should provide us with
additional payment and/or a federal express or UPS number. All
international orders must provide an additional charge for payment.
Prices available on request.
